How do I get involved?

Contact Larry Cafiero at lcafiero-at-fixedbylinux-dot-com (or call 831-335-7303) or Ken Starks at helios-at-fixedbylinux-dot-com and let them know what you want to do, and if you are doing it to represent any particular distro or FOSS program. For those wishing to participate in Lindependence Portland, you can also contact David Kaplan at davek7-at-gmail-dot-com.

Lindependence 2008 is being set up around the "Team model". Each distro and FOSS program will have a "Team Tux" and if you care to work with one particular distro or FOSS program, you will be assigned to that team. Those who wish to work outside the teams may do so, but check with Ken or Larry first so we can keep things coordinated.

What distros will be installed?

That depends on what distros are represented at Lindependence2008. If there is not a team formed for a particular distro or FOSS program, there will be no one installing it during our various installfests and town meetings -- that plain, that simple. Bear in mind that this event has the potential to draw fairly substantial media attention, so it is the perfect time for a distribution or FOSS program to get their work known to the greater computing public and take an active role in their own growth.

Is that fair? Doesn't that smack of favoritism?

Not at all. This area is rich in Linux users. Our staff and does not have the time to represent any particular distro or FOSS program, we are asking the leadership of distros/FOSS programs to ask their members to participate. So if you're are head of a distro or FOSS program that you think deserves representation, or if you are a user who thinks your distro needs to be represented, step up to the plate. Distro leaders can put the ball in motion by getting your folks in the area together to represent your distro, or if you're just a footsoldier, you can volunteer your time to represent your distro. For more information, contact Larry or Ken at the links at left for more information.

How long does this last?

It depends. It could last only a day, getting the ball rolling in Portland/Beaverton for a one-day affair, or it could be on multiple days, as it was in Felton. In Felton, there are meetings/installfests scheduled on July 13, July 15 and July 26.. During these meetings/installfests, people in Felton were asked to try Linux.

How many people from Felton tried Linux?

During the course of the three events spanning three weeks, we handed out about 300 Live CDs of various distros, as well as having numerous people try out. In the course of time between the first Lindependence event and the last one in Felton, we had around 25 people convert to Linux.

Sounds great. How do I get involved?

Again, to get involved, contact Ken or Larry at the links in the upper left. If you have a distro or FOSS program you'd like represented, assemble a team and we'll give you the vehicle -- meetings, installfests, etc. -- to have your distro/program represented. If you're an individual wishing to evangelize for your distro/program, we can help you, too. E-mail us at the addresses in the first paragraph.

The first meeting of Lindependence 2008 was a success. During the course of the day, we estimate 100-150 people showed up, and several went home with Linux installed on their computers. The next meeting/installfest is July 15 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at the Felton Presbyterian Church, 6090 Highway 9, Felton. For more information, contact Larry Cafiero by e-mail at lcafiero-at-fixedbylinux-dot-com or by calling 831-335-7303.
